Fruits, vegetables, and whole grains are Honeypie Cooking & Events' favorite food friends. Fun is the name of the game. The HPC&E cooking style is hands-on and creative. The goal is to grow chefs who are knowledgeable about their ingredients, excited about trying new foods, comfortable in their kitchens, and who are invested in making dishes jam-packed with good-for-you stuff.
The Honeypie School of Cooking subscribes to the belief that when there is a positive association with new foods and ideas, children and families are more likely to be receptive to a healthier diet.
HPC&E encourages trying new foods. Like skin, hair, and eye color - we each have our very own tastebuds. As chefs and tasters, we are not going to like everything, but it is so important that we get to know all different foods and flavors.
As much as possible HPC&E uses seasonal and local ingredients. Food tastes most delicious when it is in season. Eating food in season also increases our appreciation for ingredients when we have them, knowing that they won't be available this fresh forever.
Honeypie Cooking & Events is founded & run by From-Scratch Cooking Teacher Extraordinaire, Shayna Marmar, also known as Miss Cookie (a whole-grain, fruit and vegetable cookie that is).
Shayna received a B.A. in Early Childhood Education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She has built her unique style of hands-on cooking programming on the foundation of her education training.
Shayna has taught her classes in schools, homes, and for non-profit organizations. She has had the fortune of working for cookbook author and food-justice advocate, Bryant Terry, who has provided her with invaluable mentoring.
In addition to Honeypie-ing & Event-ing, Shayna currently enjoys working with children and families as the Associate Director of the Temple Sinai Preschool in Oakland.
Shayna is silly, loves fruits and vegetables, and if you're lucky - she might play you a song about food on the ukulele!
Thematic series run in either 4-week or 8-week sessions, one class per week. Series are a great way to dive into a concept full force for extended learning and fun. With time to explore concepts in-depth, children's food discoveries are broadened and reinforced, creating a strong connection to each food topic of focus.
